Coach's Comments: The 4-A State Championships were held on May 9th and 10th at beautiful Pinehurst #6. Davie County finished 11th out of the 12 teams that were competing for the team title. The War Eagles shot a very solid 305 on Day 1 of the competition which was tied for 8th place, but was only 1 stroke back of 6th and only 5 strokes back of 5th place. The team was led by Tommy Dillon's 74, Jason Gallimore's 76, Joe Sink's 77, and Justin Cook and Chase Moore both shot 78 for the 4th card of the day. The team was very excited about the first day results and enjoyed themselves tremendously. After completion of the round, we went over to historic Pinehurst #2 just to take in the sights and scenery of the host of several previous US Open tournaments and will host both the Men's and Women's US Opens in 2014. We then went back to Pinehurst #6 to hit some practice shots on the range and work on our putting strokes for the next day.
Day 2 was a different story. The team wanted so bad to match the previous day and possibly even move up a few spots to get into the top 5. After some adversity and some bogeys, players started pressing and trying to get strokes back on the next hole of play which forced some shots that weren't to our individual strengths. This led to more bad holes and even more pressing on the holes that followed. Leading scorers on Day 2 were Tommy Dillon and Jason Gallimore (79), Justin Cook (81) and Logan James (84). At the end of the day, the War Eagles had a team total of 323 for a 2 day total of 628 and had slipped to 11th place. This was still a marked improvement from last years 2 day total of 644 and the team is very proud to have made it to the State Championships for the 2nd consecutive year. It is a huge accomplishment considering only twelve 4-A teams from across the state make it to the tournament.
